Garush Melkonyan is a visual artist and filmmaker whose practice examines the methods and structures by which we communicate.
Working across moving image, installation, and sculpture, he stages environments for his characters and audience to consider how we form language and the invisible societal codes that influence how we engage with others.

Many of his recent works even push the limits of language to explore the absurdity of human interaction and our often futile attempts to connect with each other and other species.
Employing various filmmaking techniques and formats, from documentary film and television interview styles to computer-generated montage, reality shows, and multi-screen video installations, Melkonyan pokes at the reliability of filmmaking as a medium and urges us to consider questions around truth and fiction.

Often creating a loose script where his actors can improvise, Melkonyan invites his audience to mediate between the idea of a person versus character and reflect on the space between these two subjectivities and how we all perform.

Guiding much of his work is an anxiety surrounding our failure to communicate as our species faces ongoing political and ecological crises. With interest in science fiction, new technologies, intersubjectivity, and our relationship with nature, Melkonyan's work asks: How have humans lived, and how will we exist in the future?
